Paid Media

Read this if: you're self-serve and your message already resonates organically. Paid amplifies an engine you already have. Skip if: you're pre-PMF or your motion hasn't decoupled yet.

Paid is the new physics' amplifier, and a trap if you reach for it too early. Pouring paid into a motion that hasn't decoupled is headcount by another name: you're renting growth that stops the day you stop paying, and masking whether the underlying motion compounds. Validate that your product lands and expands on its own first, then turn paid on to scale a signal that's already real.

What's changed

The platforms became the AI. Performance Max, Advantage+, and LinkedIn's predictive audiences consistently outperform hand-tuned campaigns because they see patterns no human can. Manually segmenting the audience now starves the algorithm of the volume it needs to learn. Your lever is no longer "tune the algorithm." It's "feed it the right inputs": who to reach, what to show them, and where they land.

Creative variation is the new bid optimization. Where you used to tune fifty ad groups, you now tune fifty creative variants. AI made variants cheap, so the constraint moved to whether you have anything worth saying in them. Same slop ceiling as every other channel.

Tracking got harder. Privacy changes and attribution noise mean the platforms know more than you do about what's converting. Trust them and work on inputs, or spend a lot fighting them and learn slowly.

Do this

  • Consolidate campaigns; expand creative. Three to five broad campaigns with twenty-plus variants each, and let the platform allocate.
  • Treat your landing page as the primary lever. It's the one thing the platform can't optimize for you, and where your positioning actually has to show up. Most teams under-invest here by 10x.
  • Set up server-side conversion tracking, and seed audiences with your closed-won accounts rather than job-title filters.

Don't do this

  • Don't micromanage bids. That era ended.
  • Don't burn budget on top-of-funnel without measurement. Brand spend at seed with no way to measure pipeline contribution is lighting money on fire.
  • Don't run paid without an organic foundation. If the message isn't landing organically, paid won't fix it. It'll just spend faster.

In practice

The most striking thing about the standout AI-native companies is how little paid they used. Cursor reached $100M ARR on essentially no marketing spend; Railway (an Unusual Ventures portfolio company) reached roughly four million users having spent zero on marketing; Midjourney scaled to a nine-figure business self-funded, with no paid acquisition at all. Each had a motion that worked organically first, and paid, where used, amplified a real signal.

Your first 30 days

  • ☐ Confirm you have organic evidence a message resonates before scaling paid behind it.
  • ☐ Collapse over-segmented campaigns into three to five broad ones with twenty-plus variants each.
  • ☐ Rebuild your highest-traffic landing page, set up server-side tracking, and put a pipeline-contribution measure in place before increasing spend.
